2010/09/11 Pre-race field analysis

posted Sep 11, 2010 7:50 AM by Rafael Martinez   [ updated Sep 11, 2010 11:11 AM ]

Training time is over and what is done, done it is. I'm now tapering and becoming a nervous knot. It does not help that I obsess over little details and sought every piece of information I could gather from my past performances and on Cancun 70.3. So here is what to expect on Sept 19th 2010.

Climate

This is a BIG variable and even if lenient will hurt my performance. Max temperature is oscilating between 30°C - 33°C which is WAY TOO HOT and even minimum temp would qualify as mildly hot being above 24°C. There are high chances of rain and even thunderstorms so humidity will be in the 80-90% range (gulp). Fortunately that means less sun exposure but humidity and heat can put me on slow motion and brain-zombie mode so this is probably what will impact more on my performance.

Route

It is a beach start to swim phase. I have almost no experience on open water but it does not look that bleak; I believe my swim is not really that bad and my concentration will be hard to break. Perhaps coming out of the water will be hard, will try to practice that next week on cancun.

I have no idea where transition zone will be, it should be in a somewhat accessible part of Wet'n Wild park.

The bike course is quite flat and with only three 'U' turns. Seems I will be passed a lot by guys with aero-bars. It might be possible to ride a little harder on that course being at sea level, after all I trained at 2200 meters over sea level and mostly on a hilly course.

Then comes the run, here it will be a little hard to make 2 identical laps as the second one becomes really infuriating when you start to realize how much further you have to keep going until finish line. There are at least 3 bridges which may or may not be as painful as the ones on Mazatlán, boy those were really long and steep.

Previous year statistics

Here is when I start to go nuts. Some number just do not make sense to me. Minimum (fastest) times, average and maximum (slowest) in all phases of Ironman cancun 70.3 2009 for my age group (Male 30-34 D) yield this:

Swim T1 Bike T2 Run Total
Max 00:58:27 00:12:04 03:50:05 00:06:32 03:51:57 08:19:46
Avg 00:39:44 00:05:52 02:49:50 00:02:18 02:35:10 06:12:54
Min 00:28:14 00:03:29 02:18:46 00:00:49 01:49:10 04:44:20

Expected 00:44:06 00:05:00 03:26:06 00:05:00 02:13:38 06:33:51

That last row is my predicted race times, will talk about it later.

Swim phase shows no surprises, even T1 is ok but once you get on the bike things start to look fishy. Those numbers mean an average above 32 km/hr which is faster than Monterrey Olympic Tri at 30 km/hr. Perhaps it is altitude difference combined with a flat and straight route.

Then comes the run which does not make any sense at all to me. Those are quite slow times even for a half ironman run phase. I find quite unbelivable that the fastest run on cancun is longer than the half marathon split on Cozumel Ironman. I was expecting something around 1:30:00 and 20 minutes above that seems too much. But that is the fastest time which generally is an outlier so let's see averages then. 2:35:10 wow that is slower than my first half marathon a few years back, on a really hilly course, without a good night sleep and with blisters all over my feet. It may be climate or exhaustion from the bike but it really is way too slow.

So where those numbers come from? Well, making a graph of all competitors and their cummulative times should add some insights; it beats me, I can not fathom anything from this:

Raw data

Personal records and what to expect

My swim times look ok compared with 2009 and I don't think there will be surprises here, perhaps annoyances but no surprises. Transitions should be somewhat slow compared with everyone else but I don't care, I'll take them as breathers. Bike... bike, I will try to ride a little harder than usual but keeping an eye on my heart rate at all times. Running should be as planned even if it looks faster than 2009 averages, on my last long brick workout I rode 3 hours and afterwards kept a pace of 6:07 min/km for an entire hour so my prediction of 6:20 min/km for a half marathon does not seem like a stretch.

After all this training it seems fair that I've come from being in 90 percentile of my age group on Monterrey and expect to be below 75 percentile on cancún but only time will tell. So wish me luck, scratch that: wish me FUN!

2010/08/31 Build 2 Recap

posted Aug 31, 2010 3:21 PM by Rafael Martinez

Well this was the last real traning block, I'm now on pre-race tapering so no long workouts and reduced training volume until cancun ironman 70.3 on September 19th.

I'm quite happy with this block even though it went below training time target; but look at the difference in distance versus previous blocks :D. On hindsight my improvements are somewhat marginal in both swimming and biking but almost none running. Should spend more time on my feet next time.

With all this info in hand my target paces on Cancun Ironman 70.3 would be something like this:

Well what can I say; I'm not happy with this last blocks results. I was too lazy and didn't show up at trainings, life has a way of geting in the middle and burn out also has something to say. Will have to push harder on the last Build block.

2010/06/05 Base 4 & Build 1 Recap

posted Jun 5, 2010 12:33 PM by Rafael Martinez

Sorry for not doing Base 4 analysis on time, but here it is. Somehow after Monterrey Olimpic tri we geared down a lot and tried to catch up on Build 1. I think these are the most irregular blocks until now. Intensity went up on Build 1 and some improvements in speeds were seen; but I think we have a lot of catching up. Un fortunately we are starting Race 1 that peaks on Father's day half marathon, so what is done IS done.

2010/04/30 Race - Bosques de las lomas 15k

posted Jun 5, 2010 11:44 AM by Rafael Martinez   [ updated Jun 5, 2010 12:30 PM ]

Well overall I felt pretty strong on this race though there were some logistics issues. We arrived too early to the starting point and the race planners are the worst of this year... the only good thing I can say about them is that they do have one of the best routes to race. The aid stations were far too spaced (5km each), I don't even know how did all the runners without their own hydration supplies managed to finish; and the stations were understaffed. Timing chips were off by a lot, Ferro didn't even showed up on their logs. And the little things that nagged me: race packet pickup sucked and the race kit had almost nothing inside besides BIB, chip, an awful technical shirt and back issues of a sports magazine (2008 i think...).

Now, speaking of the race it went better than expected, on the way down I had to keep my pace down, the slope was really pronunciated and I did not wanted knee issues afterwards. Then came the big climb, at first it was easy but the last few turns were really hard, HR almost to the top. Then another slope, time to rest. And the last big climb... phew HR went up to 191 and felt burning everywhere. Afterwards I kept my pace and managed to stop only to down my powergel and on aidstation 10k. At the last turn AND climb I though I could give it all but after reaching the peak I found I couldn't go any faster. So that was it.

I think it was a pretty strong race and I'm happy with the results.

Climate was perfect again, not a lot of sun. I ran a slow race but had my right leg a little too tight so I kept it low and my HR was a little to high so I played it safe.

As I'm writing this on monday morning I feel  way more beaten than after MTY-Triathlon; when they say that is is safer to cut down on the long runs and ramp up long rides they really meant it... Will have to hit the road on wheels instead of legs

2010/04/17 ITU Worldcup triatlón Monterrey NL

posted Apr 20, 2010 5:13 PM by Rafael Martinez   [ updated Apr 20, 2010 5:44 PM ]

Well this party is just starting, I was becoming a knot of nerves and cramped muscles just before the start. Climate was perfect and completely out of season for monterrey, it was overcast and with a little drizzle; just a little uncomfortable on the bike but no problem whatsoever.

Swim

Wow it felt longer than expected and made a few errors here and there. Should pay more attention to where I'm heading and how to swim with lots of faster swimmers around. Fortunately Santa Lucia river is an artificial only a meter deep and without noticeable current; cancun will be another kind of animal being open water. Lost time going around a fountain... dumb me. Got out of the water 4 minutes after planned but I felt pretty strong.

T1

I went slow through transition, forgot to eat my energy bar or to peel it's wrapping off so no bar.. took a couple of gels for on-ride consumption and off to the bike.

Bike

It was a flat course but with the drizzle I kept my pace low as there were many U-turns, puddles, loose gravel and a few bumps here and there. Perhaps I did the right thing, a lot of riders got flats or skidded. Also kept it slow because it is the first triathlon and I did not know how my body would respond to the challenge. Could be a little faster.

T2

Boy this one I messed up, went on a wrong lane. Mind wandering off a lot

Run

This was a fun one to watch, not to do... Slipped on the first bridge, I was not paying attention and my soles were muddied. Never underestimate doing toilet stops, did mine too far from the start and my pace was WAY much faster after relieving myself.

Overall

I'm pretty happy with the results, now it is clear that cancun is doable and perhaps with better paces. Some adjustments to the train plan are needed but nothing major, will have to add more interval training and switch long rides to Long bricks. Practice nutrition on bike and a lot of swim drills.

2010/04/11 Base 3 end

posted Apr 11, 2010 9:26 AM by Rafael Martinez

I'm not completely happy with this block but it is averall good enough. Had to cut back a little on week 2 and kept it low on week 3. On the good side, I've just bought my racing bike and feels great; already took my first fall ;P. Feels preety good to be on a road bike after training on a mountain bike.

So here are some graphs of my progress, still I think this could be better. Next block will be somewhat harder with 2 races planned, my(our) debut on triatlhon and a half marathon :D  stay tuned.

First: Training time by training block (each block of 4 weeks)

Training distances

Average speeds. Swim should be on 2 km /hr, bike on 20 km /hr, run on 8 km / hr... really need to change training in order to be on 12 km / hr.

Heart rate measures. There is no data for swimming. Biking should by 20 bpm lower than running.

Pace. Swimming is time pero 100 m, bike and run is time per 1000 m. In the graph lower is better. Expected measures are 2:24 min/hm swim, 3:12 min/km bike, 7:0 min/km run
